Competing in the modern world requires us to think about quality.
Competing in the modern world requires us to think about quality. How do we compete with the rising economies of China and Asia? Quite clearly, we cannot compete in the same manner or way. China and Asia have a vast resource at their fingertips, this being cheap labour. But cheap labour is not the only key to success. There are many other qualities important too. In order to compete we have to differentiate what is that we sell, and how it is that we do that? European and American economies are much further advanced drawing on technical and financial strengths, we can compete.
Competing in this race one has to ensure that their competitors are ready to compete. When you have in one hand a worker who is willing to work as many hours as you will pay him, and do any job that you request. It may seem unlikely that we can even enter the race, but we can compete. First we have to establish what it is that we are good at and use are infrastructure to its full possibility. In the developed world we have a complicated society. We are living in the age where we are more and more aware of what we like and what we don’t like. It requires commitment and good management to implement a successful quality strategy for companies in the coming years.
The number of times that I come across bad service, bad products is a lot higher than the reverse of this. One can see enough good ideas by walking down the high street, one can also see enough areas for improvement. The first step to quality is to ask ourselves how can we do things better. Unless an individual or a company is developing itself, then by the very nature of the game they are going backwards.
There are no short cuts to implementing a quality standard in your company. It is much more than just a manual or a checklist. It is about the hearts and minds of the people who work for you. They do not have to be a scientist or a brain surgeon to understand what is going on around them. If a company opens dialogue with all its participants, mountains can be moved and impossible made possible. Not only is this good for business but also good for everyone who works for you. One has to engage on every level of our lives and businesses also operate on these levels.
